So glad we stayed in Buffalo, an old western town in the foothills of the Big Horn National Forest. We parked the RT in the Deer Park Campgrounds which was a short distance from the Historic Downtown. In the morning we hiked a portion of the Groose Mountain Trail and lunched on grill cheese sandwiches along the banks of the Clear Creek.
That afternoon we strolled the historic district and Mitch bought a cowboy hat and looked so good in it that he was offered a partial scholarship to the Buffalo Rodeo Academy for the Aged.
That night we had dinner and listened to great rockabilly and country music in the Saloon in the Occidental Hotel. The Bison burgers and local IPA were great. The Occidental Hotel was established in a large tent in 1879. During the Johnson County Cattle War it was the headquarters for the small ranchers. The hotel is filled with all kinds of Western memorabilia. It’s a neat step back in time. If you ever pass through this way, its worth a visit or stay. Apollo had a great time in the bar hobnobbing with the bar crowd and occasionally doing a number on the dance floor.
