We left Buffalo in the morning and decided to take the northern route (IS 90) across Montana because we wanted to enter Yellowstone at the Northwest entrance. Our reason for doing this was to board Apollo for a few days at a ranch in Gardiner, MT, so we could have more flexibility in the park. On the way to Yellowstone we stopped at the Little Big Horn Battlefield where Sioux and Cheyenne defeated General Custer and his troops.

We then stopped at the Petroglyph Caves in Billings Montana. Some of the petroglyphs are more than 5,000 years old. The site is well maintained by the Montana State Park Service. The cave drawings are in red.
