When we left Seattle it was still raining heavily. After a day of difficult driving we were relieved to reach the Eugene Oregon home of Alan Ash. Alan grew up in Union, NJ with Mitch. He’s the younger brother of Mitch’s close friend Micky. With a West Virginia drawl and full beard, one would think he grew up in the mountains. Alan, who loves working outdoors, is a very talented stone mason. His work is featured in books on artisan stone work, he takes on interesting large projects, and he teaches classes on stone masonry. He showed us some of the projects done by students on the grounds around his home. He also is a very productive farmer and when we arrived he was shucking and freezing the corn he had grown.
