We put in another heavy day of travel and drove north through Tennessee stopping only for gas. About 500 miles later we wound up near Mt. Rodgers National Forest and camped in the nearby Grayson Highlands State Park. We got there after dark and only one of the three campgrounds was partially open. The only other campers were two hunters. This was another gem of a place to stay with wild ponies roaming through the highlands. We stayed in the Stables Campground where there are stalls for 60 horses. In the summer folks trailer their horses to the camp and ride the mountains trails. It rained the next day so that put a crimp in our hiking plans. The southern Virginia highlands are quite special and we would like to come back some day.
