“Why go to Shulenburg, Texas?” you might ask.. Well it is supposed to be the warmest part of the Hill Country. That is what drew us. Plus it was on the way to Cajun country where we planned for our next stop. On the way we passed a fire bombed wreck that was once someone’s RV. There is an ongoing discussion among RV’rs – do you turn off the propane while driving or not. We guess this answers that question.
We stayed in a very comfortable campground, but it was so cold they turned off the water at night. The camp host said this was more than he bargained for and was pulling his rig out and heading or Guadalajara, Mexico the next day. But don’t worry, our propane heater worked just fine, the water tanks did not freeze, plus Apollo kept us very warm sleeping in our bed.
Schulenburg, was founded by German, Austrian, and Czech settlers in the mid 19th century. There is still a vibrant German and Czech culture there, five beautiful painted churches in the region, and the excellent Kountry Bakery with its array of fruit pastries and Kolaches, strudels, and various types of sausage rolls.
